Fig. 1 - Paziente con AIDS e malattia sistemica da CMV. Presenza di due lesioni ulcerative a margini netti, iperemici e superficie ricoperta da essudato grigiastro, localizzate sulla mucosa della gengiva superiore. 
Ulcere dolorose della mucosa orale da citomegalovirus (CMV) possono essere localizzate in qualunque sede nel cavo orale e possono essere confuse con ulcere aftose, periodontite ulcerativa necrotizzante o con ulcerazioni da herpesvirus. In genere si manifestano nell'ambito di una malattia sistemica da CMV in pazienti fortemente immunodepressi.

Painful oral ulcerations due to cytomegalovirus (CMV) can appear on any mucosal surface and may be mistaken with aphthous ulcers, necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis, and ulcers due to herpesvirus. CMV ulcers in the oral cavity usually occur in individuals with severe immunodeficiency and disseminated CMV disease.
