Ethiopan wolf mother and cubsHello, my name is Canis Simensis, but you can call me Sim for short.
Take a good look at me and at my babies. We may be the last Ethiopian Wolves you'll ever see. Our species is critically endangered. There are probably less than 400 of us adults surviving, in the highlands of Ethiopia. We are probably the most threatened canid species in the world.
Our habitat has been destroyed through expanding agricultural activities by humans. We survive in only a few mountain ranges.
Our human friends have published an Action Plan to save us, including expansion and better management of the protected areas, and the development of a captive breeding program with re-introductions to those areas where our populations are most severely depleted.

Julian 2003 Sep 18— LVDI ROMANI XIV— ANTE DIEM XIV CALENDAS OCTOBRIS MMDCCLVI A.V.C
Explanation of various calendars

The emperor Trajan was born Marcus Ulpius Traianus at Italica in Spain, in DCCCVI A.V.C. (53 AD).
The emperor Domitian was murdered in the Imperial Palace this day in DCCCIL A.V.C. (96 AD). He was 44. Nerva became the next emperor this day.
Flavius Dalmatius became co-emperor, in Constantinople, on this day in MLXXXVIII A.V.C. (335 AD).
In Greece, the Festival of the Eleusinian Mysteries was celebrated this day and the next. Many Romans sought admittance to these mysteries, including Marcus Aurelius, who succeeded, and Nero, who did not. Cicero, who succeeded, implied of the rites of Eleusis that "...they seem to be a recognition of the powers of Nature rather than the power of God." (from The Nature of the Gods)
