Hello,
my name is Helix Ceratina. You may call me Tina for short. I am a Corsican Snail. My species is critically endangered. From 1902 to 1995, no human had seen anyone of us, or, if they had, they did not notice. We only have 7 hectares of habitat left, in the suburbs of Ajaccio, on the southwest coast of Corsica. Now my species is protected under French law, and our habitat is covered by an "Arrêté de Protection de Biotope", the first ever taken specifically in France for a snail. Despite this, our survival near Ajaccio is in jeopardy because of development (airport, access to beach, etc.). Our human friends have bred us in captivity and there are plans to establish a new population elsewhere in Corsica. In Neolithic times we Corsican Snails had a much wider distribution on the island. |
