Hello,
my name is Diomedea Exulans, but my friends call me Dio for short. I am a Wandering Albatross, one of 16 albatross species identified as globally threatened (compared to just three in 1996) in the year 2000. The majority are undergoing long-term declines, with significant numbers suffering a cruel death by being drowned after being caught accidentally on baited hooks set by criminally negligent longline fisheries. Our friends at BirdLife International have started an international campaign Save the albatross: keeping the world's seabirds off the hook by getting longline fisheries to adopt appropriate measures to reduce the accidental by-catch of us seabirds. |
