wandering albatrossHello, my name is Diomedea Exulans, but my friends call me Dio for short.
I am a Wandering Albatross, one of 16 albatross species identified as globally threatened (compared to just three in 1996) in the year 2000. The majority are undergoing long-term declines, with significant numbers suffering a cruel death by being drowned after being caught accidentally on baited hooks set by criminally negligent longline fisheries.
Our friends at BirdLife International have started an international campaign “Save the albatross: keeping the world's seabirds off the hook” by getting longline fisheries to adopt appropriate measures to reduce the accidental by-catch of us seabirds.

Explanation of various calendars

The rites of the Eleusinian Mysteries, begun on the Festival days of the 18th and the 19th, would continue with initiations taking place in an underground chamber full of passageways and sacred objects. These rites would continue till the end of the month.
The Greeks also celebrated the Feast of Nemesis on this day.
The emperor Augustus was born Gaius Octavius at Rome in DCXCI A.V.C. (63 BC). On this day in CCLXXIV A.V.C. (480 BC) the Greeks defeated the Persian fleet at the battle of Salamis. This essentially ended Persian attempts to dominate the West. An extended period of peace and golden age culture followed in Greece.
One of the four great playwrights of ancient Greece, Euripides, was born this day in 480 BCE. Euripides introduced numerous radical innovations to the stage, including large casts of actors, siongers and musicians, night-time plays with light and fire, machines for creating real or illusory motion, and shocking levels of violence. The stage was never the same again.
