Con il termine "coscienza" ci riferiamo alla capacità di percepire sensazioni, emozioni o pensieri.
Il CDSC esamina sul piano scientifico il problema del rapporto tra mente e cervello, ossia tra coscienza e materia. Questa analisi mette in evidenza come le nostre attuali conoscenze scientifiche, contrariamente ad un'opinione oggi molto diffusa, dimostrino che il cervello non possa generare la coscienza, la cui esistenza implica la presenza nell'uomo di una entità non-biologica/non-materiale. Il problema della coscienza è quindi strettamente connesso a quello dell'esistenza dell'anima.
